Margaret Malaghan (Chair)

My involvement with hSOTG began as a volunteer for the 2005 event. I became a director in January 2012 and Chair in late 2013.

I am very interested in a wide range of the arts and am delighted to be able to put my governance experience as a director in the private and not for profit sectors into arts organisations such as hSOTG, Artists Alliance (2005 – 2011), the C Art Trust and NZ Trio Foundation.

I split my time between Auckland and Waiheke, have been a member of the Waiheke Community Art Gallery and the Auckland Art Gallery for many years.  My strong interest now is in building the arts and cultural knowledge of New Zealanders by creating opportunities for people to experience the power and beauty of contemporary landscape sculpture on Waiheke Island.

Jonathan Rutherfurd Best

As an art lover and collector myself, I am simply thrilled to be sitting on the Sculpture on the Gulf Board. As the Innkeeper and Owner of The Oyster Inn on Waiheke, I have been humbled by the way our local community has embraced us. This appointment enables me to give something back and it’s also an opportunity to share a great deal of knowledge, experience and connections. My mandate is to ensure the 2017 hSOTG event showcases the very best that Waiheke has to offer along with providing a platform to propel NZ art and sculpture into the international arena.

I’m proud to be part of a group of talented professionals who are truly focused on increasing the engagement of local, national and international visitors with what I consider to be one of NZ’s greatest public contemporary sculpture exhibitions.

Tony Chamberlain

I have been involved as a trustee, director, consultant, CEO and senior executive within the arts and creative enterprise sector in New Zealand and Australia for over 20 years. It has been a privilege to work with museums, galleries, theatres and festivals within the performing and visual arts where people are passionate about, and committed to, the potential of their organisations to make a valuable contribution to their communities.


It is not surprising therefore that, on deciding to return to New Zealand and make Waiheke Island my home, I took the opportunity to become involved in Sculpture on the Gulf, completing a strategic review of the 2013 event and then joining the Board. I am excited to be part of a great team committed to making headland the preeminent biennial presentation of New Zealand contemporary landscape sculpture involving the foremost artists of Aotearoa. And more than that, to embrace the potential, in the longer term, for Waiheke Island to become an internationally significant sculpture island.


Formerly a partner in KPMG and Arthur Andersen, I have held senior executive positions within the private and public sector before deciding to focus more recently on enabling people working purposefully within the creative arts and social services sector to make a positive difference for their communities.

Brooke Howard-Smith

I grew up on and off Waiheke and have a deep love for the island. It is without a doubt my tūrangawaewae. My mother is an artist so from a young age I’ve been surrounded by art and artists. It’s this strong connection to the island combined with a deep belief in the value of supporting the arts that compelled me to jump on board headland Sculpture on the Gulf 2017 as a director.

Over the last 25 years I’ve been fortunate enough to have worked with brilliant minds building a global clothing and lifestyle brand, Senate as well as organising and producing national events like The Rise Up Christchurch telethon & Comedy for Cure Kids. I am currently working on a project for The All Blacks and Cure Kids to follow up on 2015 Rugby World Cup song Team Ball Player Thing.

My role in helping facilitate marketing and communications will see me helping to spread the word about this very special event.

Barry Fenton

I’m in love with Waiheke.

I have owned my property since 1988 and Meg and I live here for 5 months of the year.  I’m passionate about art and sculpture walks having visited many overseas sculpture parks.  We are great collectors of sculpture for our Waiheke  property.

I am a retired businessman having owned businesses for over 40 years.  My field of expertise is in sales and marketing and as director of Philantropy these skills have proved invaluable.

I’m very clear that this event is about showcasing NZs leading and emerging artists and with our vision to be New Zealand’s Premier Sculpture Walk I know we must deliver in this area.

I’m excited to be responsible for Patrons support….I have a great network of friends on Waiheke and I am excited and motivated to be involved.

Caroline Forsyth

I spent 40 years as a foreign service officer with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, serving in Paris, Mexico City, Port Vila and Buenos Aires, as well as in positions in Wellington. My most challenging assignment, as I see it, was running New Zealand’s campaign against French nuclear testing between 1995 and 1996, which led to the closure of the Mururoa test site and laid the foundation for better relations with France. I retired from the position of Deputy Secretary in charge of multilateral affairs in 2010 – a position that covered everything from whales to climate change. A long association with Waiheke as a part-owner of Te Whau Vineyard led me to settle on the island, where I now live on the vineyard. My involvement with headland Sculpture on the Gulf reflects the importance I attach to Waiheke’s future as an island of wine, of art and of sculpture.

Jon Ewer

I am a Chartered Civil Engineer and a Fellow of The Institute of Professional Engineers. I have extensive experience on large infrastructure projects both here in New Zealand and overseas. I have worked in places as diverse as East Africa, Australia, Borneo, Thailand, Papua New Guinea, the Middle East, Great Britain and throughout the Pacific. I first discovered Waiheke whilst sailing in the Hauraki Gulf in 1994 and promptly fell in love with the island. In 1999 my wife and I bought a small block above Onetangi where we established a three hectare vineyard. The next ten years were spent developing my viticultural skills at weekends – as well as working on the improvement of my palate for fine wine. I was fortunate to be invited to join the Board of Sculpture on the Gulf in 2013. I had some years before chaired the Wairoa Arts Council and I am a steadfast member, and supporter of, the Waiheke Community Art Gallery. It is a privilege to again be involved with the committed and professional governance team who will lead the way to what promises to be an even bigger, better and more successful Sculpture on the Gulf 2017 – one which our whole community can be proud of.

John Goodwin

I am a landscape architect and have been a director of Boffa Miskell for 25 years. I work on a wide variety of master planning, urban design and environmental planning projects throughout New Zealand and the South Pacific region. My current professional portfolio includes a wide range of clients, including government agencies and councils; infrastructure, energy and utility companies; and trusts and private sector clients. One of my personal objectives in this work is to create places that people can engage with so that they can better appreciate and enjoy their surroundings.

I have had a small landholding on Waiheke since 2000 and live there with my wife Angela where we have designed and built a home and where we tend a small olive grove. I have walked the Headland Sculpture on the Gulf trails for many years and really enjoy the event. I have also worked with a number artists in my capacity as a landscape architect. For me, the placing of fascinating artwork in the Waiheke landscape creates a quite wonderful combination of visual experiences.

I’m delighted to join the Sculpture on the Gulf board as a Director – Community Engagement / Consents and I’m hoping to share, guide and provide technical advice and assistance with regional and district planning, and to help obtain the resource consents needed for the event.

I specialise in evaluating landscape and visual effects and advising on site and route selection for a range of infrastructure, energy and utility projects, providing integrated design solutions and mitigation strategies in both urban and rural locations.

I’m thrilled to join the Sculpture on the Gulf board as a Director – Community Engagement / Consents. And I’m hoping to share, guide and provide technical advice and assistance with regional and district planning and in obtaining resource consents needed for the event, that’s where my skills and experience will be valuable.

Zara Stanhope

Art is my number one passion; in fact, I believe it can change lives. And it should be an intrinsic part of life. Having moved to Waiheke in 2013, you will find me on Onetangi beach whenever there is an opportunity (swimming is passion # 2). Appreciating the unique legacy that headland Sculpture on the Gulf has established on Waiheke I hope that I can help contribute to the future of headland as the foremost New Zealand outdoor art event by applying my experience as an arts professional. Art needs to be an accessible part of daily culture, whether it be on Waiheke or at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki where I am Principal Curator and Head of Programmes. My experience has included senior roles at institutions with outdoor collections of art, such as Heide Museum of Modern Art or Monash University in Melbourne, and organising the programmes at other institutions including the Adam Art Gallery at Victoria University of Wellington. Bicultural Aotearoa New Zealand is place of creativity that reflect its multiple histories, location in the Pacific and cultural richness. Join us in February 2017 to engage with the many ways artists reflect and shape our environment.

Andrew Scott

I have recently returned to Auckland after 8 years in Melbourne. Auckland has changed so much and is a fantastic city with Waiheke on our door step.

I have visited the last two Headland Sculpture on the Gulf and when asked to join the board it was a very easy decision. Working in the communications business for the last 25 years in NZ, Australia, and London I felt I could help to make the hSOTG 2017 and even better event. Waiheke is a fantastic get-away destination and I look forward to hSOTG 2017.

Pak Peacocke

In 1987 I started The Show Business as a vehicle to bring my experience to the local industry and have worked on many different types of events from concerts and shows to corporate theatre and product launches.

I have been involved as director/producer/sound technician of iconic NZ events over a period of 30 years and have worked internationally with the likes of U2, Elton John, and Jimmy Barnes.

Some local events include:

  • Coco Cola Xmas in the Park – AK and CHCH for years and years (250,000 pax in Auckland)
  • Everything on Queens Wharf (as far as outdoor events) – multiple events throughout the Rugby World Cup
  • Auckland Arts Festival – he’s the guy that looks after the Groupe F pyro show
  • Splore Music Festival
  • NZ Fashion Week

I am very much looking forward to being able to bring my experience to an event like headland Sculpture on the Gulf.
